Living in Melbourne
It's a big plus that it's not at all as "outbacky" as seen in most Australian TV shows shown in Europe. - Patrick
Melbournians are generally friendly, gregarious, helpful, informal and unpretentious. The warm summer months bring people to the parks and beaches to enjoy outdoor activities, while the colder winter months have led Melbourne to develop a strong and varied restaurant, bar and live music scene.
People from all over Australia travel to Melbourne with near-empty suitcases to take advantage of the excellent shopping, particularly the endless rows of shops along Bridge Road, Richmond, and Chapel Street, South Yarra.
Melbourne has a very large multicultural population, with people from over 140 nations calling it home. There are large communities with origins in the UK, New Zealand, Italy, Greece, Vietnam, China, India and Malaysia, and each of these groups has contributed towards the unique cultural blend. Melbourne's Chinatown was established in 1854 and is one of the oldest in the world. Melbournians can also sample other international cultures in well-known precincts such as Victoria Street, Richmond (Vietnamese), Lygon Street, Carlton (Italian) and Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (Greek).
